.X file exported from Cinema 4D does not animate

I have been trying to get a .x file exported from Cinema 4D (using the XPort plugin) to work with the animation component. I have to used the old bones-rig (instead of joints) in order to get it to be recongised as a 'skinned' animation.

However, the animation is not playing -- it just jumped to the last frame (as defined in the XML file) and just stays there. What should I be looking out for?

A few questions:

1. Does it work in the directx mesh viewer?
2. If so, does it work when you use it with ModelAnimator without splitting up the animation?
3. If the answer to these questions is yes, then have you set the tickspersecond value in the xml file to be equal to the AnimTicksPerSecond value in the .x file?
4. If the answer to all of these is yes, make sure that there is a frame in between the start and end frame (inclusive).
